A meeting was held at the Audiovisual Council on the topic of "Control over the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language in television broadcasting"
On January 26, 2026 the Audiovisual Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan held a meeting with program directors and chief editors of television channels to discuss "Control over the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language in television broadcasting".
The meeting discussed the statistics on the monitoring conducted by the Audiovisual Council regarding the use of foreign words in television broadcasting during December 2025. The programs of 14 nationwide terrestrial and satellite television channels broadcast in last month of previous year were monitored using an AI-based software system. Feature films, TV series, plays and other artistic works, as well as speeches of foreigners, were not taken into account during monitoring. The list of foreign words most frequently encountered during initial observations had been prepared and sent to the Institute of Linguistics of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences to verify whether Azerbaijani equivalents exist.
According to the official opinion of the Institute of Linguistics, 33 of the submitted words were identified as foreign words having equivalents in Azerbaijani. The monitoring results were subsequently refined and updated. According to the final outcomes, presenters (hosts) of 14 television channels used these 33 foreign words totally 1366 times in December.
Taking into account that the monitoring will be continuous, and the broadcasters were recommended to approach seriously to the issue and to strengthen editorial control in this direction. It was noted that, if, based on the results of subsequent monitoring, the trend of inappropriate use of foreign words having equivalents in Azerbaijani does not decrease, administrative measures will be applied in accordance with the legislation.
