An international summit titled "Empowered Media for a Conscious Society" was held in Ankara
On 29-30 April 2025, an international summit titled "Empowered Media for a Conscious Society" was held in Ankara with the organization of the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) of Türkiye. The Republic of Azerbaijan was represented at the event by Fazil Novruzov, the Head of the Office of the Audiovisual Council.
The main objective of the summit was to conduct a comprehensive examination of the impact of media content on society and to assess the role of media in both individual and collective transformations. Taking into account the strong influence of the media on social change, the summit presented a wide range of innovative perspectives through insightful speeches, international expert panels, and academic discussions.
Fazil Novruzov, the Head of the Office of the Audiovisual Council, took part as a panelist in the special session "The Impact of Negative Media Content on Society and Social Behavior, and Alternative Solution Proposals". In his speech, he addressed the causes of the spread of negative information in Azerbaijani media and the efforts undertaken to combat its various manifestations, including disinformation, fake news, content with elements of violence and fear, material undermining the family institution, and information harmful to children. He also outlined the activities of the Audiovisual Council in this regard. He commented on the current situation regarding the dissemination of negative content on social media platforms, which is prohibited or restricted by the laws "On Media" and "On Protection of Children from Harmful Information". He stressed possible ways out of this situation and pointed the importance of improving media literacy and strengthening public responsibility in the media environment.
Experts representing various countries also took the floor during the panel session. They shared observations on the negative impact of media in their respective countries, described existing regulatory practices, and presented awareness-raising initiatives being implemented. The speakers emphasized the relevance of this issue at the international level and the need for global cooperation.
The summit played an important role in drawing attention to the existing realities and challenges related to the impact of negative media content on society, as well as in identifying practical steps that can be taken in this field.
The information and proposals presented will serve as a valuable basis for shaping future media policy, particularly in the area of the protection of children and vulnerable groups. By bringing together different perspectives and the experience of experts, such discussions once again underline the importance of a comprehensive approach to tackling pressing social issues.
