COP29 coverage by Azerbaijani media: 60000 information materials and more than 4500 TV reports
During the two weeks of the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), information agencies, as well as online and print media, dedicated a significant portion of their content to the summit. On various days, up to 60% of all news focused on COP29. From November 11 to 23 approximately 60000 links related to the topic were generated. Of these, around 42000 were covered in Azerbaijani, over 10600 in Russian, and approximately 7300 in English.
In covering COP29, the news agencies were the primary source of information. Each agency assigned approximately 10 journalists and photojournalists to work in the event pavilion. They interviewed numerous guests, prepared articles and detailed reports on hundreds of meetings and discussions.
Given the attempts to manipulate information about COP29 in foreign media, hundreds of key materials regarding the summit were provided by news agencies in three languages. Articles and statements by some heads of media entities about the importance of COP29 were covered in the world media on their own initiative. A section dedicated to COP29 was created on the websites of news agencies and online media entities to make information about the summit more accessible.
Since the first day of the summit, active posts related to COP29, which became primary focus of the country's information space, have been shared on the social media accounts of media entities. Including these materials, the Azerbaijani segment of social networks recorded over 10 million user interactions with COP29-related posts in the two-week period following COP29.
COP29 and its related events were also extensively covered on Azerbaijani television channels. Azerbaijani television channels prioritized the event by deploying more than 60 crews to cover COP29. On certain days, particularly those of the national leaders' conference, the number of crews was notably higher.
Monitoring of national TV channels from 10 to 24 November 2024 revealed a total of 5344 broadcast materials in various formats, including special reports, interviews with foreign delegations, heads of state and government, live broadcasts and other formats. In addition to news and special reports, television channels provided coverage of the COP29 by organizing separate discussion and analysis programs featuring local and foreign experts, as well as extensive debates. In total, 1234 materials were broadcast on "AZTV", 900 on "Real TV", 840 on "AnewZ", 759 on "ARB24", 757 on "Baku TV", 429 on "CBC TV", 326 on "ATV", 321 on "İTV", 295 on "Xazar TV", 149 on "Space TV", and 91 on "ARB".
The coverage of the COP29 on national channels was also met with great interest by the viewers. According to data from "MARSA LTD", a television audience measuring company, the average daily viewership of Azerbaijani television channels during COP29 was 5 million 336 thousand people, with the total viewership of Azerbaijani television channels being 7 million 888 thousand people.
Considering the historical decisions made and the significance of the summit's outcomes, the country's media continues to cover the topic even after the conclusion of COP29.
